【Obituary】 |

It is with deep sadness for me to inform you that Ryuma IMAI passed away suddenly on February 16, 2025. He fell at his home in an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage and died on the same day, aged 48. It happened just 4 days before his solo exhibition held at my gallery from February 20 while he was devoting all his energy to make some new works for the exhibition. It was deeply sorry for me to inform the collectors and fans this tragedy. Also, it could be imagined that it was regretful for Imai himself more than anyone else. Ryuma IMAI, born in Tokyo in 1976, started his artist carrier from 2008. Since then, he has made up over 4000 works during almost 17 years artist carrier with his very original ways. He pours enamel onto base materials such as canvas and paper without making a rough draft and looking at the sketches or photos. Therefore, he creates animals and humans from his accumulated memories while accepting the unpredictable and uncontrollable flows with pouring enamel and painting acrylics, which are full of life and their innate vitality. In the summer of 2023, his first solo exhibition at a museum was organized by Menard Art Museum (Komaki, Aichi Prefecture). As an artist, he is at the age where the best is yet to come, and the future is something to looking forward to his next step. I cannot still believe such a sudden farewell as well as all of you. In November 2009, I vividly remember the moment I first laid eyes on Imai's work, feeling an encounter as if I had truly fallen in love with it. A very original line, an extraordinary sense of color, and a unique yet flawless ability to draw. With a sense of life overflowing from the works, and above all, the way they seem to release the emotions of the viewer, I recall feeling the immense potential of this artist as if it were yesterday. Imai’s works have been loved by the people not only in Japan, but also all over the world, also he has been loved by them in his personality with having free and peaceful heart. I believe in that his works and personality will be continuing in our heart in the future. I would like to express my deepest and most sincere gratitude to all of collectors and fans for his works, and to all those who have continued to provide their kind and warm support. Regarding the exhibition extended from the initial schedule, I will hold the exhibition as “In memory of Ryuma IMAI” at H-art Beat Gallery around the middle of May. For further details, I will be sure to update it later. The funeral ceremony was held by his family, relatives and friends. I sincerely ask for your kind consideration to their feelings.
